“The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.”

Psalm 46:7, 11
Many of the psalms in the Bible were written to be sung. If you’ve been singing songs in churches for the better part of your life, you probably recognize many lines from hymns in the sacred passages of Psalms. I’ve been in churches where the full voices or quiet hushes while singing words of Scripture has sent a shiver down my spine. You feel God’s presence profoundly.

The “song” of Psalm 46 even repeats as in a chorus the line, “The LORD Almighty is with us.” This very truth about God was written of and sung of by David and the other psalm-writers long before Jesus walked on earth and long before the Holy Spirit was given at Pentecost. From the beginning of time and throughout the centuries, God has made it known to His people that He is with them.

Psalm 46 is a favorite psalm I have turned to for encouragement for myself and for others. Recently, in three long-distance chaplain-related calls with desperate people, I shared verses from it with them. Whatever the circumstance, the fact that the Lord Almighty is with us gives comfort.
