“Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.”

John 21:13-14
If ever there was a divine interruption, it was when the risen Jesus Himself appeared at the edge of the Sea of Galilee one morning to His disciples.

They were fishermen, so after Jesus’ crucifixion, they returned to what was familiar. But after a long night on the boat, they’d caught nothing and were heading back to shore. Soon they heard a voice telling them how to fill their nets. They took the suggestion and hauled in 153 fish! Only then did they realize that it was Jesus who’d called out to them. And there He was, inviting them to join Him on the beach for breakfast.

What could have been better than fish and bread served from the hands of their Lord? After they’d eaten, Jesus spoke specifically with Peter. The aroma of the campfire may have prompted a memory of the last time he was at a charcoal fire: the night he denied knowing Jesus. Jesus gave Peter the chance to undo those three denials with three statements of his love and loyalty. Fishing was the past; shepherding God’s flock would be his calling now.
