“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together … but you were not willing!”

Luke 13:34
Some of my best grade school memories are of playing baseball with the neighborhood boys who accepted and valued me, their only teammate with pigtails. One day, two boys got into a dust-raising wrestling match over me. But I was just a kid with no stirrings of puppy love and totally clueless about being someone’s girlfriend. Later that evening, the boy who “won” came and serenaded me at the door until I stepped out and invited him to play on my swing set!

God romances our souls far more wondrously than the boy in my neighborhood did. You might think of it more like a young man courting a young woman who has captured his heart. Now magnify that tenderness a thousand times, and you’ll come closer to the Lord’s way with us. He longs for relational communion with us yet endures patiently when we are slow to respond to Him.

Even when we’re oblivious or resistant to His overtures, the Lord draws us to Him in His perfect timing and ways. If He is moving in your heart, listen to the tender voice of the lover of your soul drawing you near.
