“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.”

Deuteronomy 6:4-5

God commands us to love Him with all of our heart, soul, and strength. That’s pretty comprehensive. Like me, have you wondered at times if you are loving Him with that much passion? God also recognizes that we love ourselves, and He commands us to love others similarly. Love, after all, is not a finite quantity. It expands and grows, its primary object the One who is worthy, the One who is infinite, the One who is love Himself.

I see a progression that comes from loving the Lord. The more I love Him, the more I love my wife; the more I love my wife, the more I love my kids; the more I love my kids, the more I love society. But if I loved my children first with such dedicated, exclusive love, I would shut out my wife and God and the world. Only God is worthy of being the foundation of our love.

And He is more than just our best option. He is our Creator, Protector, and Provider. He sent His Son, Jesus, to save us from sin and death. None is more deserving of our love, or more lovely to our hearts, souls, and minds.
