“Only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Luke 10:42
I was surprised when a friend told me he was leaving his job. I thought his position offered him all he could want. “That’s only on the surface,” he said. “I’m increasingly aware that I can’t fulfill my personal mission if I stay.”
I hadn’t heard many people speak in these terms before. But I began to think about my own “personal mission.” Did I have one? What is it that’s most important to me, the thing I’d hope to be remembered for? I know people whose personal mission seems to be getting me to vote as they do, or accumulating material wealth.
Jesus blew notions like those out of the water when He spoke to His friends Mary and Martha in their home. He didn’t reject Martha’s earnest desire to be hospitable, but He did point out her anxious spirit while she served. Then He turned to Mary and commended her for doing what is better: putting Jesus at the center of her life. Mary’s personal mission was to know Jesus and live for Him.
Give the worrisome details of your life to the Lord and ask Him to help you keep Jesus at the center.
