“So I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth that you now have.”

2 Peter 1:12
When you persevere, you persist, you continue, you stick with it, you endure. It’s hard to persevere! But Peter exhorts us to add perseverance to the basic faith of our salvation (see 1:6). His wasn’t some pie-in-the-sky theology. He was an eyewitness to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. He had come to his last season of life realizing that even when he had not persevered, God surely had.

With every ounce of our being and every day of our lives, we’re to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. We “fight the good fight” (1 Timothy 6:12) and long to hear the words “well done” by our Lord and Master. But we face temptations, sickness, loss, and grief throughout life. Will we persevere?

The past year for me has included all the above and more. Pain accompanies me by day and night. Once fit and healthy, I now have limitations that have changed my life greatly. I try to persevere; I cling to my firmly established faith. But when I feel I can’t endure, my faithful Savior perseveres without fail in His mercy, love, and care for me.
