“You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.”

1 Thessalonians 5:5
Paul speaks of children of the night and children of the day to describe two different spiritual states. “Children of the night” describes people who are doing things covertly, things they want to conceal and escape punishment from. Looking at their spiritual lives, you would conclude that they are either asleep or drunk. Like someone dozing at the wheel and speeding toward the edge of a cliff, they give no concern to the coming judgment of God.

But children of the day are spiritually awake, sober, and ready. They are like soldiers prepared for battle. They wear the breastplate of faith and love, and the helmet of the hope of salvation (see v. 8).

As children of the light, we are grounded in grace. With faith we trust that Jesus is with us and has gone before us in life and in death. With love we serve Him and others willingly. With hope we look forward to our promised inheritance in Christ. “If we walk in the light… we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus… purifies us from all sin” (1 John 1:7).
