“For your Maker is your husband—the LORD Almighty is his name—the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth.”

Isaiah 54:5
Our Lord has a tender heart for widows. When Jesus was on earth, widows (especially those who were childless) were among the poorest of people. Jesus praised the widow who gave just two small copper coins for the temple offering: “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on” (Mark 12:43-44).

Also consider the widow of Nain: Jesus saw her only son, dead and being carried out of the city, and “his heart went out to her and he said, ‘Don’t cry.’ Then … he said, ‘Young man, I say to you, get up’” (Luke 7:13-14)! He did, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.

And then remember the parable of the persistent widow, whom Jesus praised as an example to teach us to pray diligently (see Luke 18:2-7).

The Bible mentions many other widows: Anna, Tabitha’s friends, a widow whose sons were about to be taken away as slaves by her creditor, the widow of Zarephath, etc. Remember the dear widows in your life, too.
