“You are … members of God’s household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.”

Ephesians 2:19b-20
Though the early church faced great persecution and many false teachings, the Holy Spirit used these things to unite the church so its people would cling to God’s inspired Word.

During this time, the canon of Scripture soon became evident. Even in those early days of the late 1st century and into the 2nd, churches gathered up and shared all four gospels and the apostles’ letters between themselves. Of course, they used the Old Testament as well.

Churches began to form creeds that helped articulate the doctrines found in the Bible. These early creeds may have been intended for use in preparing converts for baptism. The nature of our Triune God is explained in them. Many believe these early creeds grew into what we now call the Apostles’ Creed which has a clear, Trinitarian structure.

Knowing the truth is the best defense against a lie. We are privileged to have all of God’s Word bundled together in our Bibles today. Let’s remember to hide it in our hearts so that we know Him better and bring glory to His name daily.
