“I can do everything through him who gives me strength.”

Philippians 4:13
“My daughter’s high school yearbook has this Philippians verse as her ‘favorite saying or motto.’ It has meant a lot to me, too. From becoming a father, to fighting in Afghanistan, to serving time in prison, I have looked to Jesus to give me the strength, patience, courage, and humility to endure all things. He has always supplied whatever I need to do so. This Scripture has been my antidote for fear. Fears of caring for an infant, of facing the Taliban, or of trying to avoid prison thugs are/were all real. But even more real is the faithfulness of Jesus to carry me through.”

Can we do everything through Christ? Philippians 4:13 is not a “Christian version” of the world’s You can do anything if you just set your mind to it declaration.

It makes sense to us that when life is hard, we need Christ’s strength. We also need it when things are going well, the times when we tend to rely on ourselves, relish earthly comforts, and forget who has been the Giver of it all. In every season, we rely on God’s abundant grace.
