“Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church.”

1 Corinthians 14:12
Sometimes we read a portion of Scripture repeatedly yet never see something until it seems to leap off the page. Last year when I was reading 1 Corinthians 14, I was astounded at how many times Paul talks about edifying, or building up, the church. Again and again he writes how important it is that everything be done for the building up of the believers. Like the rest of Scripture, Paul’s words were inspired by the Holy Spirit, so the Lord is obviously very interested in His people investing their time to build up one another. For the first time I really understood that it is also my responsibility to do all I can to help build up other believers.
Would you give that some thought today? Consider how the Lord has gifted you. Maybe you’re an artist, an accountant, or a teacher. Are you a good cook? Have a green thumb? Or perhaps you’re retired with a little extra time. Maybe you are a good listener or can encourage others in the church. As you build up others, you just might see a new way that Jesus changes everything.
