“Among God’s churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring.”

2 Thessalonians 1:4
It must have been a great encouragement for the Thessalonian people to hear this compliment from Paul, Silas, and Timothy. It would hearten them to know Paul was aware of the persecution they suffered for their faith. His commending words would have helped them carry on. But this is not the kind of boasting or bragging you and I were taught from a very young age to avoid. This is boasting ultimately in the One who proves that His judgment is right (see v. 5).

Recently, I saw some photos of Christians who were remaining steadfast under persecution in another part of the world. To see the resolve and faithfulness captured in those photos encouraged me. I’m reminded of what we’re capable of when we live in the strength of Christ and put on the armor of God—His breastplate of faith and love, His helmet of hope.

As members of the body of Christ, we can celebrate each other’s perseverance and faithfulness. And we can say with David in the Psalms, “My soul will boast in the LORD; let the afflicted hear and rejoice” (34:2).
