“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God.”

Romans 12:1

You’d have to agree that gifts are a huge part of Christmas. Phrases of excitement are expressed for the gifts that are received. “Wow,” “thank you,” or “it’s perfect” are commonly spoken. “Bless you” is not often heard today during gift-giving, and even in Scrooge’s day in the setting of the Dickens Christmas story, it would not have been common. Yet as a changed man, Scrooge was so excited to give to the poor that he said, “Bless you!” when giving to them. What a wonderful way to view gift-giving—as a benefit.

When we keep our focus on the Greatest Gift of Christmas, it seems perfectly understandable to think, “Bless you!” That is indeed what God has done for us in Jesus. And we, in turn, can be a blessing to others by giving back to the Lord.

When we consider giving ourselves as a living sacrifice, do we have a “bless you” attitude to the Lord? Or do we whine a bit at the thought of giving up self? How good it would be to have as much excitement about giving to the Lord as we do about receiving from Him.
