"He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God."
John MacArthur describes mercy as “genuine compassion expressed in genuine help.” Since God is the source of mercy and first demonstrated His loving forgiveness to us, He delights when we are merciful as well. When the Lord requires us to “love mercy,” however, He means much more than providing relief for those in need. Loving mercy actively seeks the best for others with a tenderness that is ready to forgive, sympathize, comfort, or come beside as a friend. All of those things are easier for us to do when we consider God’s genuine compassion to us, expressed through sending His Son in the moment of our sin and genuine need of help.
