“For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with the mouth that you confess and are saved.”

Romans 10:10
If you google “believe,” you’ll get millions of results. Yet all the definitions of the word concur that it is much more than just giving assent or agreement. Every part of our lives flows out of what we believe. Our beliefs govern our attitudes, the practicalities of life, and what we choose to do or not do. When we stake our lives on what we believe, our faith and actions unite.

Many who followed Jesus during His earthly ministry did not remain faithful. Jesus asked Peter if he too wanted to leave. His response was, “To whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God” (John 6:68-69). After Jesus’ death, this declaration of faith would be sorely tested but would prove genuine in the end.

Peter’s example helps me when I struggle to believe and am mystified by the hard realities of life. Because I’m built on the Rock, Christ Jesus, I am lifted above the snare of unbelief. Set your heart firmly on the only belief system that does not rest on your works but on the work of the Savior for you.
