“It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. … He will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them.”
Luke 12:37
We do not know when the Lord will return, for “the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him” (v. 40), like a thief in the night. Even to guess at such a time is presumptuous. It’s as if we are pretending to be God when we predict the time of His coming. We cannot know—but we should be ready! How would it change your life if you lived each day like He is coming tomorrow?
We’re told to be like those “waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet” (v. 36). If you have a loved one who is out late, would you not wait up to make sure they arrived home safely? We would then unlock the door to let them in. This is simply a matter of taking good care of our loved ones.
Jesus flips the image for us. Yes, faithful servants await their master’s knock, but finding them awake, “he will dress himself to serve, have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them.” Why would the master put on servant’s garb? This is what Jesus came to do! He invites sinners to dine with Him—both as their guest and as their host.
