“He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross.”

Colossians 2:13-14
We incur debt when we owe something. Maybe it’s a debt of gratitude, a debt of money, or a debt to society. Whatever the situation, you owe more than you can pay. If you are in the correctional system, you know the reality of this. You must serve your time, regain trust, and reenter society once you’ve paid the penalty for your crimes.

According to Jesus, one of the main barriers between us and a right relationship with God is the spiritual debt we owe Him. The gospel tells us that we cannot enjoy the pleasure of God’s presence until our debt is paid. This is what Jesus has in mind when He teaches His disciples to pray, “Forgive us our debts.”

Friends, before we can enjoy the gospel’s good news, we must embrace the bad news. That part says our just God demands payment for sin, a payment we could never afford. When we admit our liability and acknowledge our inability to clear the debt on our own, we are ready for the good news of the gospel: Jesus paid your sin debt on your behalf; He served your time in your place!
