“Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

Hebrews 10:25
Before my college ultimate frisbee season began, the team captains let us know that at least an 80% attendance for practice and tournaments was required. Sure, players might miss here or there, but skipping out many times would not be tolerated. Each practice a player missed was a lost opportunity to mesh with teammates.

As with a team, attendance at Sunday worship in church is important for Christian community. We go to weekly services not out of self-righteousness, but rather to submit everything in us to the One who made us. It’s to be present and engaged so that together we can grow in the likeness of Christ. It’s the response of our whole being—heart, soul, mind, and strength—to God’s glory in our lives. Both personally and corporately, we express our love for our Savior in worship.

But it’s not difficult for believers to find reasons to skip church (sometimes even because of sports). Let’s not give up meeting together. Take advantage of the Lord’s design for setting aside the regular week’s work and worries to come and worship.
