God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world … to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him.”

1 Corinthians 1:27-29
Everyone loves a story about an average, everyday guy who makes it big somehow. We like movies about the underdog winning, the little kid triumphing, or the overlooked office worker achieving. Not only can we relate, but also we would love to have something like that happen in our own lives.

Well, it has! As believers in Jesus Christ, we see that this exact situation has come to us. Here we are—sinners, nobodies—and the Lord of all creation has condescended to bring us into His kingdom.

We will see throughout this month that He works in every situation with every kind of person, no matter how “big” or “small” that person is. Surely the inclusion in the Bible of so many seemingly insignificant persons is a great encouragement to us who know well our own lowly status as ordinary, sinful people. But the Bible has no detail in it that was put there carelessly or haphazardly. Every minor character becomes a person of consequence in the Lord’s kingdom plans. And this is how He works in many of us — “the least of these” — today, too!
