“Praise be to you, O LORD, … from everlasting to everlasting. Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours.”

1 Chronicles 29:10-11
Construction of the tallest cathedral in the world, the Basilica Sagrada Família in Barcelona, Spain, began in 1882, and, remarkably, continues still today. Even unfinished, its immensity, ornamentation, and curation of the story of the Bible lack adequate description. The physics of its architecture alone are astounding. God’s transcendence to creation and His people cannot be missed from in, out, around, or above.

When I visited the cathedral, what impressed me beyond all the artistry was how awestruck the crowds of tourists were. I believe in that setting, God uses created beauty to both bind and humble sinful hearts. He woos them with more-than-subtle hints of His glory. Color and light stream in from the sun. From every shade of saturated, harmonious color, eyes are led upward to bright and brighter still. In the vast, vaulted pinnacles, one’s view is all light of the purest radiance.

It points to our amazing Creator. And yet for all its glory, a structure like the Sagrada Família is but a faint shadow of our heavenly Father’s majesty.
