“His sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him. … Then his sister asked Pharaoh’s daughter, ‘Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?’”

Exodus 2:4, 7
Sometimes the Lord’s providence is carried out by the very least of society, in this case by a little girl. Miriam may have been as young as six years old when the story took place of her baby brother floating in a basket on the Nile. Their mother had placed him in a basket, and then into the Nile River to hide and protect him from the Pharaoh’s orders that every Hebrew baby boy must be killed. Miriam stood quietly by, probably trembling with fear and hoping the reeds would hide her.

When Pharaoh’s daughter came and spotted the basket, she opened its lid and immediately felt sorry for the crying baby. Then young Miriam emerged from hiding and bravely spoke to the royal princess. “Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?” The princess agreed.

Miriam’s obedience saved her brother’s life. Moses grew up to lead God’s people out of slavery and to the Promised Land. The little girl’s actions would be a small but important part in God’s plan to save His people and bring about the Savior of the world one day.
