And when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, ‘This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.

1 Corinthians 11:24

In April, 2011 we celebrated the Lord’s Supper for the first time at New Life Prison Community church. As the prison pastor, I served everyone else before I partook of the bread and the cup. Over 100 men and a few dozen volunteers came forward to receive the elements.

At the end of the line, another server approached me and said, “The body of Christ, given for you.” I ate the bread. He spoke again: “The blood of Christ, shed for you.” I drank from the small plastic cup. Tears streamed down my cheeks as I realized that Christ’s body and blood were given not just for these people convicted of crimes, but also for a sinner like me. The one who served had been served. How meaningful it was to understand that this meal wasn’t just for others; Jesus gave Himself for me, too.

Jesus instructs us, “Do this in remembrance of me.” If you’re able to take part in the Lord’s Supper this Sunday, remember that He did this for you. Jesus gives you His body and His blood to guarantee your forgiveness and strengthen your faith.
