“One of the servants answered, ‘I have seen a son of Jesse …. He is a brave man and a warrior. He speaks well and is a fine-looking man. And the LORD is with him.’”

1 Samuel 16:18
David comes to us as the type of guy we might meet and think, Wow, he’s got it all! Musically inclined, brave, wise, well-spoken, handsome … God saw David’s potential and was with him. This was evident as he confronted Goliath (1 Samuel 17:45). Saul was fearful of him because “the LORD was with David” (1 Samuel 18:12) and “He became more and more powerful” (2 Samuel 5:10). Nathan the prophet said to David, “Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for the LORD is with you” (2 Samuel 7:3). Could a person be more assured of God’s presence?

We read in verse 13 (and again later in the book of Acts) that David was a man after God’s own heart. He certainly was chosen as God’s own heart would choose, and he even proved himself (at least up until 2 Samuel 11) to be a better man and leader than Saul. But we know David’s whole story; he was far less than perfect.

Yet God accepted David, forgave him, and made him an instrument of His purposes. That same graciousness is extended to us. God, in the mercy of His own heart, always goes with us.
