“‘Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.’ …Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he … saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.”

2 Kings 6:16-17
The angel of advent brought an important, life-changing announcement to the shepherds. Then he was joined by a heavenly chorus, a “great company.” They didn’t add any details to the actual message, but they did contribute to the majesty of the situation. We can hardly imagine how breathtaking it must have been!

There are many things in life that we do not see, things like magnetism or gravity (though we see their effects). But there is also a spiritual dimension to life that is hidden to us, unless by God’s command it breaks in on us. God’s heavenly host exists to serve Him, praise Him, and minister to His people.

Does this mean that you have a guardian angel? Probably, and perhaps many! But more comforting than the thought of all of those heavenly beings looking out for you is the knowledge that they serve God who loves you, protects you, and sent His Son to save you. They are not extra. The Lord lacks nothing, and without need to be sparing, He is extravagant in providing both for our welfare and our salvation.
