“But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption as sons.”

Galatians 4:4-5
Many years ago God led my wife and me to adopt an infant boy from an orphanage in Korea. The adoption came from our own initiative; it was costly and was the thing which rescued him from being orphaned.

God sent His own Son so that each one of us might be adopted into His family. Our adoption into the family of God was done at His initiative; He came to us while we were yet sinners. It was costly; the payment on the cross at Calvary cannot be quantified. Our rescue was complete; He saved us from being spiritually orphaned and bound for eternal death.

How we view ourselves now in light of this is important. We could let others define us, and unfortunately we often do. We could define ourselves, and that is certain to be detrimental. Or we can let God define us. When God’s view of us as His adopted children takes hold, we will not wallow in pride or shame. Rather, we will revel in joyful praise and in humility at the wonder of His enfolding us as His own.

What a Christmas highlight—that Jesus was born on earth so that we could be adopted in heaven!
