“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

Colossians 3:17
Earlier in my career I taught new recruits in the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. I would emphasize to them, Remember who you are—what your uniform and your badge represent—and make sure your community knows you are committed to them.

The same could be said for us as followers of Jesus. Paul summarizes his teaching, saying that we must bring honor to Christ in every aspect and activity of daily life. He addressed ethical and spiritual behavior in verses 12-17, and now he wraps it all up.

If we belong to Jesus, He motivates our actions. Thus, anything we do (in deed or in word) comes out of knowing Him. This action through Christ brings honor to the Father. Praise and thanksgiving become barometers of our spiritual health. And we pray that the mark of Christ will be left on many.

Law enforcement graduates are sent into the community to serve, protect, and uphold the law of the land. Similarly, we are saved in Christ, indwelt with His Spirit and His Word to enter into the community as His servants, bringing Him glory in all we do.
