“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

John 10:10
Jesus promised His followers an abundant life. What exactly does that look like? The average person might say it means having plenty of wealth and possessions. But an abundant life in Christ is so much more than the size of our bank account. Events happen in our lives—whether we are Christians or not—that shake our foundation and show us how fleeting material goods are. When we find abundance in Christ in good times or in bad, we begin to know the beauty of His promise to us.

The difficult times will come, and they’ll bring varying degrees of suffering. Several years ago, when I was only 43, my life hung in the balance following a stroke. In the aftermath of it and in all the years following, my family and I have experienced the promised, mysterious, often breathtaking abundance in Christ.

Jesus Christ laid down His life and rose from the dead to give us an abundant life in Him—a life we will explore in this month’s devotions. See how the Lord weaves His abundance into the shortfalls of our lives, nourishing us for life’s journey.

This is the sixth Anchor writing from Glen VanderKooi. However, the effects and complications from the stroke he suffered in 2014 have advanced significantly so that this edition of Anchor will likely be his last. He has found devotional writing to be a beautiful way to share his faith far and wide while his world post-stroke has grown smaller. Kori, his wife of 31 years, cares for him at home. They are loved and supported by a multitude of loyal friends and family members, their four grown children, and two recently added daughters-in-law.
