“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.”

Colossians 3:16
Colossians 3 hinges heavily on all that has come before and on verse 1: “Since then you have been raised with Christ.” Christian, since you are united with Christ in His death and in His resurrection and with His church, “let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.” The principal duty is to let the message dwell among you richly; singing and spiritual songs are accompaniments.

Music is not the primary command; rather, it aids and acts as a tool allowing the precious truths of the Bible to reach deeply into our souls. This is an art lost to many of us today, where we should sing not solely for enjoyment or for worship (both good things), but also for pressing truths upon our hearts.

On Monday morning, which comes to mind more easily from Sunday, the songs you sang or the sermon you heard? For this reason, it is vital that the music we sing on Sunday mornings or during the week supports the primary focus—the Word of God. Through the gift of music, doctrines of Scripture, promises of God, and stories of His grace and goodness live in us.
