“The wife of a man … cried out to Elisha, ‘Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the LORD. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.’”

2 Kings 4:1
Elisha listened compassionately to the grieving, fearful widow. He asked her what she had in her house. “Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a little oil” (v. 2b). So the man of God told her, “Ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few” (v. 3).

Despite his strange instructions, she approached her neighbors and begged them for empty jars. Then Elisha said, “Go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars and, as each is filled, put it to one side” (v. 4). Her sons brought the jars to her one by one. Miraculously, the oil flowed and flowed until all the jars were full. Precisely then, it stopped. She had enough oil to pay her debt, and there was oil left over for her and her two sons to live on.

This unnamed woman trusted a godly man who showed her in a very practical way that the God of Israel is the One who fills our lives to overflowing. Take note of the ways that the Lord has provided for you so that you have more than you would have ever dared to ask for.
