“Do your best to come to me quickly.”

2 Timothy 4:9
Paul sensed the end of his life was near. As he wrote from his dungeon cell, he experienced loneliness and longed for a friend. So he wrote to Timothy, pastor of a large church, urging him to come as soon as possible.

In 14 verses Paul highlights some 20 friends, many who were faithful (but also others who had let him down). Clearly, his friends were important to him. He asks Timothy—in the familiar way a person has with a good friend—to come quickly and bring his cloak, his scrolls, and his parchments. Timothy would bring him God’s Word to affirm his hope and to encourage him in these stressful hours.

We know as God’s children and servants that He ultimately strengthens us, but we also know there are seasons of feeling alone. God often provides courage to face hardship and disappointment through His Word. Still, there’s nothing like a friend for desperate times.

Take a moment and think of one person you could check on who is experiencing hardship. Your practical friendship and a verse from God’s Word will go a long way.
