“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.”

1 John 1:7
Jesus declares that He is the alpha, the beginning. Not only is He the foundation and origin of all things, but He also gives us a new beginning when we first turn to Him. In fact, each time we turn to Him in the ups and downs of life, He gives us a new start.

John makes it clear that as Christ followers, we cannot happily continue in deliberate sin. In our everyday trespasses—for all of us there are many!—we need to repent and be determined to forsake our sin. By His grace He forgives us and grants us a fresh start. Moreover, His Spirit stiffens our resolve to run from sin when temptation is at our heels.

The prophet Micah tells us that God will hurl all our sins into the depths of the sea. I love Corrie Ten Boom’s addition to that: “He also puts up a notice: ‘No Fishing!’” What comfort there is knowing that the Lord will keep no record of our wrongs. He is the God of the second chance, that’s for sure. But He also is the God of the third, fourth, fifth… chance, giving us a new start every time we turn to Him.
