“The ransomed of the LORD will return. They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads. Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away.”

Isaiah 51:11
I love many of the “old songs,” but I also enjoy fresh new ones. Sometimes the catchy tune or inspiring lyrics of a new song really lifts my spirits. I’ve thought about how grand it must be to be an opera singer who deeply moves an audience with singing. After a particularly stirring aria, there is that wonderful hush and then the tumultuous standing ovation!

Similarly, God is thrilled to hear our new song. It may come from a new experience of Jesus as our Rock. “He lifted me out of the slimy pit… he set my feet on a rock…. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God” (Psalm 40:2-3). This new song will put a spring in our step and communicate more than words alone. “Many will see… and put their trust in the LORD” (v. 3b).

Whenever we turn to Jesus in our daily walk, not only will He give us a new song to sing, but He also will “take great delight in you” and “rejoice over you with singing” (Zephaniah 3:17). All the beautiful old hymns or wonderful new songs of this world do not compare with that!
