“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

Luke 6:38
God is the great Giver. He gave in creation; He gave in His guidance to His disobedient chosen people; He gave the Holy Spirit to individuals throughout the Bible; and then—most amazingly—He gave His only Son so that we might have eternal life. At Pentecost He poured out His Spirit on every believer. God’s giving has been bountiful.

Think of all He gives you each day: life and breath and good things to enjoy. If you have any need, He gives generously without finding fault (see James 1:5). There is a lavish abandon in the way God gives, and it is how He would have us give, too.

We often wonder how much giving would be “just enough.” Jesus didn’t answer questions that were aimed at limiting our love. When asked, “Who is my neighbor?” He turned it around to show instead to whom we should be a neighbor (see Luke 10:29-37). Our giving ought not to be a matter of legalism but of grace. As we learn to give regularly, freely, sacrificially, and joyfully, we realize more and more that these are the ways the Lord gives to us.
