“To Timothy, my dear son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. … I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy.”

2 Timothy 1:2, 4
Paul, the seasoned pastor, wrote to young pastor Timothy to encourage him in life and ministry. Note Paul’s tender words calling Timothy his “dear son” or “beloved child.” Indeed, Paul was like a father to him. Paul’s love for Timothy moves him to pray “constantly” in his prayers “night and day” (v. 3) for Timothy. He longs to see him face to face.

It’s a beautiful thing to have people like this in your life. I have several who are like this to me, men and women who are my spiritual (and biological!) parents and encouragers. In a world where we spend so much time alone, working remotely, immersing ourselves in online media, how can we still press in to find community and loving, supportive relationships?

God calls us to seek the love and support of the community of faith. Think of this on Sundays, whether you’re attending church in person or online. Ask yourself if you might be suffering from a lack of brotherhood and sisterhood with others. Jesus drew near to be with us, giving us His Holy Spirit. We now draw near to others in His name.
