“Eliashib the high priest and his fellow priests … rebuilt the Sheep Gate. They dedicated it … building as far as the Tower of the Hundred …. The men of Jericho built the adjoining section, and Zaccur … built next to them.”

Nehemiah 3:1-2
I love the church. When I join my brothers and sisters in Christ, I remember that I am not alone in my brokenness. I also remember that I am not the only one trying to rebuild by grace through faith in Christ. Jared will tell me about something He learned from God’s Word. Charlie will tell me of how he was convicted of his sin. Chase will tell me of new awakenings to God’s grace in his repentance.

From all earthly perspectives, the venture that this remnant of God’s people undertook was foolish—attempting to rebuild while surrounded by enemies. But work they can, and work they must. Next to Eliashib were the men of Jericho, and next to them was Zaccur the son of Imri. Over and over in this chapter, there were brothers next to other brothers, carrying out the work.

The Lord Jesus Christ is the chief cornerstone of His church, but in this great redemptive work, He has set brothers and sisters side-by-side. If we are truly leaning on Christ, we will also lean on our brothers and sisters, knowing that our labors together are not in vain.
