“Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

Luke 10:40b
Envision the scene: Jesus was coming to visit! There were so many things to clean and freshen up, to cook and prepare. Martha was rushing to make everything perfect. Each task she completed led to yet another thing that could be done to make His visit more pleasant. Even after Jesus arrived, Martha continued dwelling on the details. But her sister Mary focused on Jesus, sitting at His feet and absorbing His every precious word. Martha couldn’t help pointing to her sister and demanding of Jesus, “Tell her to help me!”

I imagine many of us can relate to Martha and her frustration. Jesus didn’t despise Martha’s servant heart; He loved her enough to tell her that her pursuit of perfection of things on earth was wrong. Does that hit close to home for you?

Poor Martha! Throughout the generations we have come to associate her name with being too busy to be with Jesus. But this incident reminds us that though our role may be to serve, when we choose to prioritize close communion with the Lord first, our anxiety over perfectionism fades away.
