“‘Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?’”

John 6:9
Impressed by Jesus’ healing of the sick, a huge crowd followed Him to the shore of the Sea of Galilee. Jesus went up on a mountainside with His disciples and inquired of them where they might come up with food for the people. Stating the obvious, Philip remarked that eight months’ wages wouldn’t buy enough bread for them all. The disciples’ faith was small, but Andrew put forth a boy with a small lunch of five loaves and two fish. Even so, he doubted that it would help.

When the crowd of thousands sat, Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed as much as people wanted. He did the same with the fish. A miracle steadily unfolded. In the end, the disciples gathered 12 baskets of leftover bread after everyone ate!

That young boy must have wondered what Jesus could do with his meager lunch. We followers of Jesus still today wonder how He will make much of the small things in our lives, of the faltering faith we have, or of the hopeless situations we face. But God has been making something out of nothing since the beginning of time.
