“He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces, he was despised, and we esteemed him not.”

Isaiah 53:3
Pain can be very isolating. We feel the sting of heartache and broken dreams that we see now were too good to be true. The pain cuts deep as we begin to believe that we are alone in our current situation. Surely no one understands what we’re going through.

One of my favorite descriptions of Christ comes out of the book of Isaiah. The prophet describes Jesus as a “man of suffering, familiar with pain.” It is a description that reminds me that what you and I endure on this earth was also endured by our Savior. There is One who does indeed know our pain.

Jesus understands what it is to be human. He understands the heartbreak and the suffering that is, sadly, part of living. When I read verses like this, it reminds me that Christ endured agony far greater than any I will ever have to bear. He chose to take on that agony so that my sin could be wiped away. In doing so, He has secured my place in heaven with the Father.

You and I will have to face great pain in this world. But we do so with a Savior who endured it for us first.
