“Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.”

Proverbs 16:24
It is no exaggeration to say that the words we speak have significant weight in our daily interactions with others. Words are not simply sounds made into the air. When we speak, we do things: we bless and we curse; we build and we tear down; we console; we comfort; we correct. Make no mistake—words are powerful, both for good and for ill.

This should not be surprising to us as Christians. God spoke the world into existence with His creating words. Through the words of the prophets, God led His people—warning, teaching, and preparing them for the coming Messiah. In the fullness of time, God sent us His Son, the Word made flesh, to dwell among us and save us from our sins.

Even now, God speaks the new creation into existence through His ever-living Word, the gospel. As we image God through our own words, we must remember their exceptional power and employ them to sweeten the lives of those who hear them. After all, think of the Lord’s gracious words which called you to Himself, bringing you the healing of salvation.
