“The LORD came… calling as at the other times, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ Then Samuel said, ‘Speak, for your servant is listening.’”

1 Samuel 3:10
Samuel’s mother Hannah had prayed desperately for a child, even promising to give the child back to God if He would grant her desire. Thus, in time, when baby Samuel arrived and grew to a young boy, he went to live in the temple where he served under Eli, the aging priest. Samuel was probably accustomed to answering calls from Eli at all hours, so he quickly responded when hearing his name. The call came three times, but Eli said he’d given no summons. Finally, Eli realized that Samuel was hearing the voice of God Himself.

The message given to young Samuel was not a personal word for him but one of coming judgment against the house of Eli. After hearing the voice of God, Samuel’s ears were tuned to listen. He became a great prophet to the nation of Israel, throughout his life receiving personal messages as well as words for God’s people.
