“I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn…. The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you.”

Exodus 12:12-13
Years ago I was in the jury pool of those selected to serve for a month-long murder trial. Ultimately, I was not chosen and was relieved at that time to be passed over.

Consider Israel. God came down to render punishment for sin but passed over the houses with blood painted on their doorposts. Sin was not ignored, but it was paid for by the blood of the lamb. What a striking foreshadowing of our greater Lamb, Jesus!

At the beginning of Jesus’ ministry on earth, John the Baptist pointed to Him saying, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29) The heavenly host sang, “You are worthy… because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased men for God from every tribe and language and people and nation” (Revelation 5:9).

How thankful we are that God’s wrath for our sin has passed over us. No matter how large our failures, how far short we fall, “there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8:1). Jesus came down and mercifully did not pass us by.
