I think it is harder to wait for the Lord than to work for the Lord. We often obsess over what we are doing for Him, but rarely content ourselves to wait and meditate on what He has done and is doing for us.
Ruth exercised incredible faith through her ordeal in Moab and then back in Bethlehem. But I don’t think she was ever more faithful than in following Naomi’s instruction to wait upon her redeemer, Boaz, who would not rest until Ruth’s deliverance was settled. Boaz had already told Ruth that there was a “redeemer nearer than I.” Those words were true in more ways than one.
Our eternal redeemer, Jesus, often calls us to rest in Him and wait upon Him, trusting in His completed and ongoing work of grace. Waiting requires us to admit our helplessness and own His faithfulness. When struggling with depression, it is not only important to get out there and serve, but also to confess your need and wait upon the Lord. Be strong and take heart. The wait is painful, but He will not rest until we are resting wholly in Him.
