Have you ever felt overwhelmed while preparing for guests? It may not even be a matter of how many people, but who the people are that can be intimidating. Early in our marriage, my husband wanted his new boss and family to come for dinner. Feeling self-conscious of our small house and my mediocre cooking skills, I kept putting off the request. Finally, I agreed and humbly invited them. I began to realize that hospitality is more than the physical surroundings; it’s the attitude of the heart.


For years, Ebenezer Scrooge had never accepted his nephew Fred’s invitation for Christmas dinner. When he finally did, it was a wonderful evening full of delightful foods, games and fellowship. Hospitality – this practice of warmly receiving guests – is meant to be a blessing for both the hosts and guests.
