“The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” Deuteronomy 31:8
In keeping with the theme of God’s faithfulness, I must relate the story of my first hike across Catalina Island. For my first overnight hiking excursion, I planned a 20-mile trek over the course of two days but unfortunately did not own a proper backpack. Consequently, I didn’t have room to bring a sleeping bag or sufficient clothing, food, or emergency equipment. What I had was a recipe for disaster. At the end of the first day, I arrived at the campsite cold and hungry. I set up my hammock, unaware of how much heat I would lose out of the back without a sleeping bag. I tried to sleep in a bush on some grass but couldn’t find shelter from the chilling wind. I prayed for God to provide some form of shelter from the wind, and He did. I ended up spending that sleepless night in an outhouse. God faithfully provided shelter (though it wasn’t pleasant) and later a friend who met me on the trail with extra supplies. I look back on my ignorance and laugh. But how thankful I am for the Lord who never forsakes me.
