“By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.”

Proverbs 24:3-4
Nathanael’s low regard for Nazareth was evident. The town was obscure, despised, and never mentioned in the Old Testament. This may have prompted Nathanael’s comment, “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” (John 1:46)

I grew up in a dusty Pennsylvania railroad town along the wide Susquehanna River. It was paradise to me: I could roam the bordering Appalachian foothills, wade in the  Yellow Breeches Creek, and cross a bridge to the bustling capital city of Harrisburg. It wasn’t until later when my family moved to a more prosperous area that I learned  of my hometown’s reputation. The condescending jokes and mockery about the people and the town seemed strange to me since it was my home. There my mother took us to church every week, sang hymns with us, read Bible and missionary stories, cooked delicious meals, helped the needy, and prayed with and for us.

No matter where you dwell or what people think of it, your home will contain the most “rare and beautiful treasure” when Jesus is never forgotten under your roof.
