“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship.”

Romans 12:1
Other versions of the Bible tell us to offer our bodies to God as it is a “reasonable service” in light of His mercies. I love how Eugene Peterson breaks down this Romans passage: “Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to.work, and walking around life—and place it before God as an offering” (The Message, 2002).

It should occur to us that one very realistic way we might place ourselves before God as an offering is by minding our health and honoring our bodies as temples of Christ (see 1 Corinthians 6:19-20). That may require a good deal of discipline on our parts.

My grandson is on a new path to health—walking each morning before work, regularly going to the gym, changing his eating habits, and discovering he’s losing excess weight. What a wonderful way to honor the Lord in everyday life!

What we do with our bodies—even the most mundane things—is an offering to God. Jesus Christ came to us bodily and lived perfectly. Out of gratitude, we give ourselves to the One who shed His blood to pay for our sin.
