“May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good.”

Hebrews 13:20-21
My mom battled Alzheimer’s disease the last years of her life and lost much of her memory. But each time she heard the song, “Gentle Shepherd” (Bill and Gloria Gaither, 1975), she sang every word. “That’s my favorite song,” she said.

There are times—some that last years—when we’re lost and in need. We can reach out to our Shepherd who never loses sight of us. One of the most powerful lines in this hymn is, “There’s no other we can turn to/ who can help us face another day.”

The Bible gives us many shepherd glimpses. The shepherd boy David would risk everything to protect his sheep (1 Samuel 17:34-35). The shepherd in the Luke 15 parable left the 99 and went after his one lost lamb. Jesus told us that He is our good shepherd, laying down His life for His sheep (John 10:11).

He is always faithful, always present, always carrying us to safety. He’s with us through the dark nights, the bleak days, and the crushing moments. The gentle Shepherd who led my mom through her hardest years is the same One who will lead us to heaven’s pastures some day.
