“Jesus then said to them, ‘I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.’”

John 6:32
Moses is the man God used to lead the people of Israel miraculously out of slavery in Egypt, through the Red Sea, and to Mt. Sinai where the Ten Commandments were given. Moses told the people of the laws by which they were to live and serve God. He led them through the desert, took them to water and food, and brought them to the border of the Promised Land—twice!

Moses was a great man and prophet (see Deuteronomy 34:10). But Jesus made it clear that Moses could only do what he did by the power of God Almighty. Moses could teach only what he learned from God.

Jesus taught that the manna God provided by Moses was more than merely physical nutrition. It pointed to something greater, the true bread from heaven, Jesus Himself, the bread of life (John 6:35). Moses could give what was given to him, but Christ gives us Himself. Manna physically fed the Israelites for 40 years, but if we receive Christ’s body—His sacrifice on our behalf—we are forgiven of our sins and will live forever (John 6:51).
