“‘Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!’ The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.”

Psalm 46:10-11
I was the new Senior Pastor—so new that I hadn’t even started yet! It was Tuesday, September 11; our kids were getting ready for school as I caught the early news broadcast. I needed to pray. I knew that if I needed to pray, others would, too. I phoned the elders of my new church, and they called a prayer meeting for that night. The church was packed—not just with members, but also with neighbors.

When things you thought were unshakable start shaking, when life becomes disoriented, scary, and uncertain, you look for certainty and strength and help. We reflected on Psalm 46 that night, a psalm which reminds us that the unmovable God of the Bible “is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

When “nations rage,” “kingdoms totter,” and “mountains tremble,” through God’s Word, prayer, and the work of the Holy Spirit in your heart, you can be certain that God is sovereign. Jesus Christ has overcome the world, and nothing in all creation can separate you from the love of God in Christ Jesus your Lord!
