“Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes.”

Proverbs 6:25
The marriage bond God designed at creation to be a life-long relationship between a man and a woman is one of the most powerful illustrations the Bible uses for God’s relationship to His people. Marriage provides us with a flesh-and-blood picture of God’s exclusive love for His bride, the Church. So when marriages are broken by sin or unfaithfulness, that image blurs.

The book of Proverbs takes marriage—and faithfulness within it—very seriously. The father’s voice we hear throughout the book devotes extended sections of his instructions to warning his son about the dangers of sexual sin and the importance of fidelity in leading a life of wisdom. In vivid language, the father pulls out all the stops to lead his son away from the folly inherent in sexual unfaithfulness. He points him towards the joy of a committed marital relationship.

Regardless of our marital status, we need to hear these words today. Our commitment to the Lord in this area provides a clear picture of God’s faithful, never-stopping love for His people.
